Erfahrungsbericht des FU Moot Court Teams 2024

Im April durften wir, das Jessup Moot Court Team der FU, den Atlantik überqueren, um an den internationalen Runden des Jessup Moot in Washington D.C. teilzunehmen - ein wirklich unvergessliches Erlebnis!

D.C. war der Höhepunkt von 8 Monaten harter Arbeit der Mooties (Carolina Bock, Franca Althoff, Laurens Roth und Oscar Pearce) und Coaches (Leonora Erhardt und Paule Schwarze) gleichermaßen. Während die deutschen Runden des Wettbewerbs eine tolle Gelegenheit waren, Studenten, Akademiker und Praktiker aus ganz Deutschland zu treffen, lernten wir in den internationalen Runden zudem ein globales Netzwerk von beeindruckenden internationalen Juristen kennen. Wir traten gegen Teams aus den USA, Jordanien, der Ukraine und Usbekistan an und lernten gleichzeitig Menschen aus sechs Kontinenten kennen. Insgesamt waren etwa 150 Teams aus über 80 Ländern anwesend - eine einmalige Erfahrung. Obwohl es uns leider nicht gelungen ist, in die Elimination Rounds einzuziehen, sind wir dennoch stolz auf unsere Leistung. Auch viele Monate nach dem ersten Lesen des hypothetischen Falls über die Sterren Forty konnten wir unsere Argumente immer noch weiter verbessern und wichtige Lektionen von unseren Mitbewerben und Richtern lernen.

Auch abseits des Wettbewerbs hatten wir eine Menge Spaß. Wir hatten die Gelegenheit, ein Baseballspiel zu besuchen, durch Georgetown zu schlendern, ein paar Museen zu erkunden und die obligatorischen Fotos vor den Wahrzeichen Washingtons zu machen. Am Abend des GoNational Balls haben wir eine unserer lokalen Berliner Traditionen präsentiert: Wir sind als Berliner Techno People gegangen - zusammen mit unseren Freunden von der Hertie School, auch wenn wir es natürlich deutlich besser umgesetzt haben. ;)

Wir möchten uns bei allen herzlich bedanken, die diese einmalige Erfahrung für uns möglich gemacht haben. Vielen Dank an Jones Day, die uns zu einer Veranstaltung in ihr Büro in Washington eingeladen haben – inklusive Blick aus dem Büro auf das Kapitol. Danke auch an Hengeler Mueller, Noerr, Dentons, Wagner Arbitration, Blomstein und nicht zuletzt an den Fachbereich Rechtswissenschaft der Freien Universität Berlin und Prof. Dr. Heike Krieger - ihre Unterstützung hat diese einmalige Reise erst möglich gemacht, wofür wir sehr dankbar sind!

In April, FU’s Jessup Moot team had the privilege of crossing the Atlantic to compete in the International Rounds of the Jessup Moot in Washington D.C. – a truly unforgettable experience!

D.C. was the culmination of 8 months of hard work by mooties (Carolina Bock, Franca Althoff, Laurens Roth and Oscar Pearce) and coaches (Leonora Erhardt and Paula Schwarze) alike.

Just as the German rounds of the competition were an exciting chance to meet law students, academics and practitioners from across Germany, the international rounds introduced us to a global network of impressive international lawyers. We pleaded against teams from the US, Jordan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, while socialising with people from across six continents. In total, there were roughly 150 teams from over 80 countries present – a surreal environment.

Unfortunately, we did not progress to the elimination rounds, but we are proud of our performance. It was satisfying to continue finding small ways to improve our arguments, learning from our opponents and judges, so many months after first reading the hypothetical case of the Sterren Forty.

As ever, all the hard work was balanced out with plenty of fun. We had the chance to go to a baseball game, wander through Georgetown, explore a couple of museums, and take the obligatory photos in front of classic D.C. landmarks. On the night of the GoNational Ball (an opportunity to show off each country’s national dress), we paid homage to our origins in the only appropriate way. We dressed as Berlin techno ravers – a theme also selected by our friends over at the Herthie School, though not nearly as well executed of course ;)

 Above all else, we are tremendously grateful to all those who supported us along the way.
